Joy
Kroeger Beckner
Born in 1944 and raised in St. Louis,
Ms. Beckner attended Washington University School of Fine Art before pursuing
a professional career in the fashion industry. In the late 1980s, she returned
to painting, but felt constrained by working in two dimensions. "My paintings
kept getting thicker and thicker," she remembers. "On a lark, I took
a figurative sculpture class. I said, 'This is fun,' and my work just took off."
The artist is inspired by the sensuous shapes of skin, bone and muscle, and while
she has worked with the human figure in the past, it is primarily dachshunds and
other short-haired breeds that she focuses on now. Ms.
Beckner's bronze dachshunds have brought her numerous awards, including the National
Sculpture Society Silver Medal, an Award of Excellence from the Society of Animal
Artists, the Ellin P. Speyer Prize at the National Academy in New York Ciy, and
four Best in Shows at prestigious invitational exhibitions around the country.
Her work is included in private collections around the world and has been purchased
for the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog for its permanent collection. | |
