Steve
Smith
Steve Smith, a Bozeman resident
since 1977, paints the Montana landscape and architecture in a style developed
from intensive study of the masters of Renaissance painting. His soft neutral
tones flow around the hard-edged lines of the structures and features of the landscape,
creating a mesmerizing counterpoint. "Butte figures so prominently in my
work," says the artist, "because, in Montana, that's where the architecture
is." Mr. Smith works in series, beginning several canvasses at the same time
and hoping that one of them captures what he's after. Mr.
Smith was born in San Jose in 1963. After earning a degree in English Literarture
from Montana State University, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago where
he began formal study of painting and sculpture. He also spent several years in
New York, where his fascination with architecture as a subject began. |
